Where to Start

Your pathway looks different depending on where you studied.

Year 0

Complete Medical School

Foundation

Graduate from an AMC-accredited Australian or New Zealand medical school with your MBBS or MD. Your intern eligibility begins from your final year.

PGY1

Intern Year

Required

Apply for prevocational training through your state or territory health department. Complete your mandatory intern year at an accredited hospital to gain general registration with AHPRA.

PGY2–3

Prevocational Training

2–3 Years

Rotate through varied clinical terms including general medicine, surgery, emergency, and your areas of interest. Build your portfolio and logbook before committing to a specialty.

PGY3+

Apply to a College Program

Vocational

Choose your specialty, sit qualifying or selection examinations, and apply directly to your chosen specialist college — RACP, RACGP, RACS, ANZCA, and others.
